PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren fired up a Portland crowd to help raise money for Sen. Jeff Merkley’s re-election campaign. The two Democrats appeared together at a downtown fundraiser. A thousand people bought tickets at $100 a pop. Revered by liberal Democrats, Warren called for a higher minimum wage, tougher regulations on Wall Street and help for students confronting the high price of college.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon lawmakers are urging state officials to look into backup plans in case Cover Oregon isn’t ready to use the federal government’s online health insurance enrollment system before the November deadline. Sen. Chip Shields requested an analysis of alternatives if the federal website isn’t ready to handle Oregonians seeking health insurance when the enrollment period begins Nov. 15.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Federal agents say they have exhausted all leads in the search for a man suspected of fatally shooting an Oregon county road weighmaster before possibly fleeing to the Midwest. A U.S. Marshals spokesman says a driver spotted the vehicle believed to have been driven by 41-year-old Dirck White on April 5 near Des Moines, Iowa. The Iowa State Patrol responded but couldn’t find the suspect’s car.
GERVAIS, Ore. (AP) – A school district in Marion County will allow some teachers to make condoms available to students as young as sixth-graders. The Superintendent of the Gervais (JER’-vuhs) School District tells the Salem Statesman Journal the board is concerned about teen pregnancy. Nine girls got pregnant this year, about 5 percent of the girls in grades six through 12.
