PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Transportation officials say part of the Historic Columbia River Highway east of Portland is closed today and will probably remain shut down into the weekend. The Oregonian reports that a landslide west of the Stark Street Bridge dropped 1,000 cubic yards of dirt, debris and a very large rock on the roadway, prompting the closure. The bridge, however, remains open for travel between Troutdale and Corbett.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A Southern Oregon woman who lost control of her pickup truck and crashed, killing her passenger, has been sentenced to more than four years in prison. The Medford Mail Tribune reports that the 43-year-old Shady Cove woman pleaded guilty yesterday to criminally negligent homicide and drunken driving. She apologized in court, saying the man who died was like family.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say 2014 has seen a spike in gang-related violence in Portland. The Oregonian reports police plan to step up patrols this weekend, noting there was a spate of gang shootings exactly a year ago.

PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) – The new hospital in Pendleton went on Amber Alert this week, but somebody forgot to tell police it was a just a drill. The East Oregonian reports that when a call came from St. Anthony Hospital on Tuesday, reporting that a baby had been snatched, four officers hit their lights and sirens and went tearing off. Pendleton Police Chief Stuart Roberts says such mistakes carry public safety risks.
