ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Felix Hernandez struck out a career-high 15 in seven innings before Endy Chavez keyed a five-run ninth with a tiebreaking RBI single, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 5-0 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays yesterday. James Jones had a two-run triple for the Mariners, who have won seven of eight. King Felix scattered four hits over seven innings.

SANDY, Utah (AP) – Fanendo Adi scored a pair of goals and the Portland Timbers beat Real Salt Lake 3-1 Saturday night for their first victory at Rio Tinto Stadium. Luke Mulholland scored for RSL. Timbers captain Will Johnson scored in the 73rd minute on a penalty kick he buried in the lower left corner. The Timbers (4-4-7) were coming off a 4-3 loss at home to the Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps last weekend.

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) – Obefemi Martins scored twice before his first-half ejection, Lamar Neagle added the winner and the Seattle Sounders earned their league-high 10th victory, beating the Chicago Fire 3-2 Saturday night. Seattle midfielder Neagle scored on a screened shot from the left side to make it 3-1 in the 78th minute. The Fire’s Harry Shipp cut the lead to 3-2 four minutes later on his second goal of the night. Sounders goalkeeper Stefan Frei stopped Juan Luis Anangono from 12 yards in the 88th minute to preserve the win.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Pac-12 university presidents and chancellors are reiterating the conference’s call for reform in college athletics at the conclusion of its summer meetings. The conference said in a statement yesterday that the Pac-12 CEO Group, which is made up of the conference’s presidents and chancellors, moved closer to finalizing a proposal that better addresses the needs of athletes and “simultaneously reaffirms the primacy of our universities’ academic mission.” The proposal includes a stipend for athletes, improving health coverage and reducing time demands.
