SEATTLE (AP) – Masahiro Tanaka struck out 11 and became the second pitcher in the majors with 10 wins, throwing a complete game last night as the New York Yankees beat the Seattle Mariners 4-2. With Seattle starter Chris Young (5-4) struggling, Mark Teixeira hit a three-run homer that barely cleared the wall in right-center field. The game-breaking shot was Teixeira’s 11th homer of the season.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Erlana Larkins scored 17 points and Natasha Howard and Shavonte Zellous each added 13 to help the Indiana Fever beat the Seattle Storm 76-68 last night. Camille Little led Seattle (4-7) with 17 points, and scoring leader Crystal Langhorne was held to eight Seattle used a 13-4 run late in the second quarter to build its nine-point lead.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Pa Modou Kah scored in stoppage time and the Portland Timbers rallied for a 2-2 draw with FC Dallas last night in the last scheduled game before Major League Soccer takes a break for the World Cup. Portland’s Will Johnson narrowed it on a penalty kick in the 79th minute.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Oregon freshman Edward Cheserek surged on the final lap to win the 10,000 meters at the NCAA track and field championships last night. Cheserek won in a personal-best 28 minutes, 30.18 seconds, smoking the field with a 53.31-second final lap. He is the first freshman to win the event since UTEP’s Suleiman Nyambui in 1979.
