Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

LEABURG, Ore. (AP) – Malfunctioning gates on a Willamette Valley dam have led Oregon hatchery officials to release 50,000 trout prematurely, in mid-winter when there’s not much for them to eat. Officials have diesel pumps taking emergency water from the McKenzie for the hatchery. They hope that supply will sustain the 540,000 trout and steelhead remaining until their springtime release. Officials say a hatchery downstream with 800,000 salmon also could be affected.

MCMINNVILLE, Ore. (AP) – Witnesses told investigators a man who fatally stabbed a McMinnville college student in November had a chance to surrender to police officers before he was shot to death, but he moved toward the officers. The Yamhill Valley News-Register says the accounts are in reports investigators made after Linfield College student-athlete Parker Moore was killed at a convenience store. No reason has been established for the stabbing.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) – Police in Springfield say a man poured gasoline on an ATM machine and set it on fire in an apparent attempt to conceal a paper trail of fake deposits and illegal withdrawals. The Register-Guard reports that police arrested 33-year-old Jeremy Shorter. It was not immediately clear how much money was involved.

OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – The Clackamas County sheriff’s office says a 35-year-old inmate has died at the county jail. A Sheriff’s spokesman said that autopsy results are pending for Bradley Alford of Fairview. The spokesman says Alford was in jail for a probation violation related to a DUI count, and was expected to be released in January.
