(AP) – A lawyer is asking for more time to prepare the defense for a Goldendale, Washington, woman accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter and wounding her 13-year-old daughter last summer at a Cannon Beach resort. The Oregonian reports Jessica Smith has pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors are asking for a trial date sometime next summer.
CANBY, Ore. (AP) – Fire investigators say a child who stuck a cell phone into a baseboard heater started an apartment fire that temporarily displaced a family in Canby. The Oregonian reports that one woman suffered smoke inhalation in yesterday fire but was not hospitalized. Firefighters say the woman used a fire extinguisher on the blaze.
OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) – The Clackamas County Sheriff’s office says a 35-year-old inmate has died at the county jail. Sheriff’s Sgt. Nathan Thompson says autopsy results are pending for Bradley Alford of Fairview. Alford was found unconscious and not breathing Monday in his cell, where he was being held on a probation violation.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon seed company is offering gardeners potatoes and tomatoes in one plant. The Territorial Seed Company in Cottage Grove calls it “Ketchup ‘n’ Fries.” The Oregonian reports the seed company says since potatoes and tomatoes are fairly closely related, they graft well together. The plant is produced by a British company.
