Here is the latest Washington, Oregon and Alaska sports news from The Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) – Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman played the Super Bowl with torn ligaments in his left elbow and will likely need Tommy John surgery in the offseason. Seattle coach Pete Carroll said yesterday before the team left Arizona that it was his understanding that Sherman would need the surgery after the All-Pro cornerback was injured in the NFC championship game against Green Bay. Sherman played in the Super Bowl without a brace on the elbow and did not appear to be impeded by the injury.

ATLANTA (AP) – The Atlanta Falcons have announced that Seattle defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will be the team’s next coach. The Falcons yesterday said Quinn will be introduced at a news conference today. Quinn replaces Mike Smith, who was fired following a 6-10 finish in 2014. A person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press earlier yesterday that Quinn agreed to a five-year deal. The Falcons exercised patience while waiting for Quinn, who could not be offered a job until after Seattle’s 28-24 Super Bowl loss Sunday night to the New England Patriots.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Jamie Weisner scored all 18 of her points in the first half to help No. 7 Oregon State beat UCLA 82-64 last night. Ruth Hamblin added 15 points and 12 rebounds and Sydney Wiese added 13 points and nine assists for the Beavers (20-1, 10-0 Pac-12), who had five players score in double figures. Jordin Canada had 19 points and 5 assists for the Bruins (8-13, 4-6). Oregon State shot 47 percent to UCLA’s 40 percent, and outrebounded the Bruins 42-32.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) – Bonnie Samuelson scored 17 points and No. 12 Stanford withstood a second-half push to get past Washington 82-69 last night. It was all Stanford in the first half, and Taylor Greenfield’s 3-pointer with 1:56 left pushed the lead over 20, as the Cardinal opened a 45-29 halftime lead. Briana Roberson had 11 points in the half and Amber Orrange added nine. Washington fought back after intermission and trimmed the deficit to six after a seven-point spurt, culminated by Kelsey Plum’s layup with 9:22 left.
