PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Portland City Council has banned the use by the city of a class of pesticides particularly harmful to bees, including one that is the most effective control of a pest that attacks roses – the city’s symbol. The council voted unanimously to adopt an ordinance that bars the city from buying or using neonicotinoid pesticides on city property. It does not stop people from using the pesticides on private property.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – The police chief in Eugene says a 49-year-old man killed by a police officer earlier this week was shot after he came to the front door of his residence and pointed a rifle at an officer. Police Chief Pete Kerns identified the man killed as Brian Babb. The Register-Guard newspaper reports that Babb was an Army veteran who served in Afghanistan in 2006.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Police say a 42-year-old man described as swinging a machete in a northwest Portland street and talking to his cat has been taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation. Officers approached the man after he set down the machete and gave him loudspeaker instructions about how they wanted him to approach. He was taken into custody without incident.

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) – A Coast Guard helicopter has plucked an ailing man from a charter vessel about 12 miles off Westport, Washington, and flown him to a hospital at Astoria, Oregon. A Coast Guard spokesman says the operator of the vessel Tequila Too called for help, saying a 53-year-old passenger was experiencing symptoms of a possible heart attack.
