Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. (AP) – The city of Cottage Grove has agreed to pay $450,000 after the death of a 24-year-old man in the city jail. Nathan Cooper died in 2012 of aspiration pneumonia while serving a sentence for possessing a pill for which he did not have a prescription. A 2013 lawsuit filed by Wendy Cooper, his mother, contended that police officers and the city denied proper medical care.

STAYTON, Ore. (AP) – A project to determine the locations of abandoned mines in the Willamette National Forest could help firefighters and others avoid injuries. The Statesman Journal reports that the four-year project found 226 abandoned mine features. The Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries used an airborne laser to scan the surface.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State University has hired a Pennsylvania firm to investigate whether it mishandled a report of an off-campus rape in 1999. University spokesman Steve Clark tells the Corvallis Gazette-Times that the firm would review OSU’s handling of the case. This is the second time in recent months that Oregon State officials have looked into claims that the school failed to adequately address a reported rape in the 1990s.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Port of Portland might lose a major player. Port operator ICTSI Oregon CEO Elvis Ganda tells the Oregonian newspaper that although German carrier Hapag-Lloyd has not announced it is ending Portland service, its vessel schedule does not show any visits. Hanjin Shipping left in February, taking nearly 80 percent of the port’s container business.
