EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon Army veteran was sentenced to 7 ½ years in prison for a traffic wreck that seriously injured a 19-year-old nursing student. The Register-Guard of Eugene reports that Joseph Umphrey was sentenced yesterday for the Feb. 23 crash in Eugene. Umphrey pleaded guilty to charges including assault and possession of meth. At the sentencing, the victim thanked Umphrey for an apology letter she had received and said she hopes he receives the treatment.

GLENEDEN BEACH, Ore. (AP) – Officials say fire has damaged the lodge roof and interior at Salishan Spa and Golf Resort on the Oregon coast. The Oregonian reports that firefighters responded early yesterday after a night manager discovered the fire and called 911. The lodge is one of about 20 buildings on the 250-acre property at Gleneden Beach in Lincoln County.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge who listened to two hours of arguments in a lawsuit that challenges a southern Oregon county’s ban on genetically modified crops says he might rule as early as next week. The Medford Mail Tribune reports that the judge is being asked to decide whether Jackson County’s ordinance can take effect June 6. County voters approved it overwhelmingly last May but the county agreed not to enforce the ban until a lawsuit filed by GMO alfalfa farmers is resolved.
