Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gun control opponents have filed a petition to recall the Democratic lawmaker behind the bill requiring background checks for most private gun sales. The recall petition against Sen. Floyd Prozanski of Eugene joins three others targeting Democrats who sponsored the legislation. The petition says Prozanski’s bill infringes on Oregonians’ rights to bear arms. Prozanski tells The Oregonian that he’s taking the recall seriously.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – A bill making it easier for local law enforcement officials to confiscate firearms from convicted domestic abusers and people under restraining orders has cleared the Legislature. Oregon House lawmakers gave bipartisan support to a measure echoing a federal law that bars people from keeping their firearms if they’ve been convicted of domestic violence. The bill heads to the governor.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Senate has signed off on a plan to allow self-service gas pumping – but only in rural areas and only at night. Oregon and New Jersey are the only states that don’t let drivers fill up their tank by themselves. The bill’s proponents say gas stations in sparsely populated areas can’t afford to stay open all night, leaving it difficult for motorists to fuel up.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Scientists report that after 20 years of attempts to save the species, northern spotted owl numbers in the Northwest are still on the decline – and at a faster rate. A Forest Service spokesman says scientists at a conference reported that owl numbers are now dropping at an annual rate of 3.8 percent. Five years ago, the rate was 2.8 percent.
