SALEM, Ore. (AP) – The state Senate has voted to require that many Oregon businesses offer paid sick leave for their employees. The bill now goes to the House, which could take it up as soon as next week. The bill applies to organizations with at least 10 employees. Workers will be able to accrue up to 40 hours of paid leave per year, which they can use to take care of their own illness or a family member’s.

BIGGS JUNCTION, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon official says a fire that started in an abandoned apartment building in the small Columbia River Gorge town of Biggs Junction destroyed that structure and one home before winds began spreading it eastward through grass and brush toward the small community of Rufus. A Sherman County Emergency Services Director says the fire burned about 3 miles to the east before firefighters got it contained last night.

ONTARIO, Ore. (AP) – A 66-year-old inmate has died at the Snake River Correctional Institution in Ontario, and Oregon State Police is investigating the death. The state Department of Corrections says James Papineau was found unresponsive in his cell. Attempts to revive him were not successful. No other details were immediately available.

DAYTON, Ore. (AP) – Farmers north of Salem have finally have identified a suspected burglar after finding a trail of broken honey beehives and huge paw prints on their Dayton property. The Statesman Journal reports that 37-year-old Juan Corona spotted a small black bear yesterday morning while he adjusted an irrigation pipe at Janzen Farms. Wildlife officials are trying to trap the bear.
