SEATTLE (AP) – Seth Smith homered and Taijuan Walker pitched seven dominant innings to pace the Seattle Mariners to a 10-1 victory over the Angels last night, dropping Los Angeles four games back in the AL wild card race. Los Angeles is four games behind New York and Texas, and three games behind Minnesota.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Matt Duffy doubled twice and drove in two runs and the San Francisco Giants beat the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 last night. Brandon Belt tripled and drove in two runs and Marlon Byrd added an RBI double to help San Francisco win its fourth straight at AT&T Park. George Kontos (3-2) retired four batters for the win after Tim Hudson failed in his bid for the 222nd victory of his career.

SEATTLE (AP) – Sounders central defender Roman Torres will miss the rest of the MLS season after suffering a knee injury last weekend against San Jose. Seattle confirmed Torres is out for the year yesterday after the captain of the Panama national team underwent an MRI.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) – The Los Angeles Lakers have signed center Robert Upshaw to a multiyear contract. The 7-foot Upshaw led the nation with 4.5 blocked shots per game until his dismissal from the University of Washington’s team last season. He went undrafted after leaving school two years early. The native of Fresno, California, was kicked off the team at Fresno State and Washington for violations of team rules during his two-season college career.
