PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A fugitive wanted in the kidnapping and torture of two women in suburban Portland nearly a quarter century ago was arrested at a hotel in Mexico, where he had been working and living under an assumed name. Forty-five-year-old Paul Erven Jackson was arrested Monday after he was featured on the CNN program “The Hunt.” He was flown to the United States overnight and booked into a Los Angeles jail yesterday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland Mayor Charlie Hales is asking the Oregon Department of Transportation to delay eviction of a homeless camp on property near Greely Forest Garden. The Oregonian reports the mayor’s office is seeking the delay so that community groups can organize the camp. The eviction was planned for Oct. 3.

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) – Environmentalist groups are protesting a timber sale in Benton County that calls for the cutting of about 8 million board feet of timber. The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports the sale has been approved by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. Most of the timber cut would be generated through variable retention harvest, a technique touted for its environmental benefits.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Varsity athletes in a west Eugene school district will sport all Nike apparel for games under an exclusive agreement. The Register-Guard reports Bethel School Board members voted to put varsity players in Nike gear during games in exchange for $15,000 in rebates for five years.
