Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin says at least two officers responded to the rampage within minutes and exchanged gunfire with the shooter. Authorities say the 26-year-old gunman killed nine people yesterday at Umpqua (UHMP’-kwah) Community College in Roseburg, about 180 miles south of Portland.

ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – Residents have gathered at a Roseburg park for a vigil for the victims of a deadly mass shooting. The crowd gathered at Stewart Park and many people held up candles as the hymn “Amazing Grace” played. Twenty-six-year-old Chris Harper Mercer killed nine people before dying during an exchange of gunfire with officers.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – A Bend woman convicted of identity theft is on probation after using a fake nursing license to secure a job as a nurse. The Bend Bulletin reports 46-year-old Melissa Olson was sentenced to a year and a half of probation and ordered to complete 120 hours of community service. Olson worked as a nurse at the facility for nine days before an anonymous tip to the Board of Nursing led investigators to the fraud.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) – Lane County’s air protection agency is extending the amount of time it will issue advisories on home wood-heating smoke and check for violations. The Register-Guard reports the new monitoring period will run through the end of May. The advisories authorize whether homes are allowed to emit visible smoke emissions.
