NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) – Rescuers used concrete drills and jack hammers to free an employee whose arm got caught in a floor drain at a Fred Meyer store in Newberg. The woman got her entire arm stuck down to the armpit while trying to fish a broom handle from the drain Saturday. She tried for 20 minutes to free herself before calling for help. KGW-TV reports that Newberg firefighters were unable to free her using oil and soap, so they called in a technical rescue team from Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue.

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) – Oregon beachgoers could soon see a spike in health advisories warning against water contact. State officials are proposing more stringent criteria for the level of bacteria that triggers a warning. The new rules would go into effect in 2017 to meet new federal water-safety standards. Program coordinator Tara Chetock tells the Mail Tribune that the proposed standard could lead to about 50 percent more health advisories, depending on the amount of precipitation. Chetock says bacteria most commonly reach beaches when summer rainfall washes pathogens into creeks and rivers that flow into the ocean.

BEND, Ore. (AP) – Bend police arrested three men for allegedly firing gunshots at their former middle school on Friday night. The Bend Bulletin reports that the three men were arrested Saturday. All are 27 years old. Two maintenance employees were inside the Cascade Middle School when the shots were reported just before 9 p.m. Friday, but no student activities were going on. Police found damage from bullets in at least two areas of the school.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) – More cities are recognizing Native Americans on Columbus Day this year as they revive a movement to change the name of the holiday to celebrate the history and contributions of indigenous cultures around the country. As the U.S. observes Columbus Day today, it will also be Indigenous Peoples Day in at least nine U.S. cities, including Albuquerque; Portland, Oregon; St. Paul, Minnesota; and Olympia, Washington.
