SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Oregon is seeing an increase in reports of abuse of the elderly as the population of older Oregonians continues to grow and people get better about reporting. A state report has found a 10-percent increase in the number of investigations conducted into the abuse and mistreatment of vulnerable people. That includes older adults and people with disabilities. The Statesman Journal reports that the state has created a hotline for people to report abuse of children or adults.

FOREST GROVE, Oregon (AP) – Forest Grove police say a 23-year-old man broke into a woman’s home while she was home and stole a purse before fleeing. Officers found the suspect about 20 minutes later. Police say he tried to bite an officer while he was being taken into custody. James Oneill is to be arraigned today.

SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Authorities in Salem say a man was arrested for choking a police dog nearly to the point of unconsciousness. Salem Police say the man was treated for dog bites Saturday, and the dog was taken to a veterinary hospital. The man fought the dog until three officers were able to subdue him.

ALBANY, Ore. (AP) – The city of Albany says its contractors accidentally last week sent about 3,000 gallons of raw sewage into the Willamette River downstream of Bowman Park. It happened Wednesday as workers were cleaning and doing maintenance on the sewer system in the area. The Democrat Herald reports the city says bacteria that may have entered the river should be flushed out of the area within a few days.
