PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say an Oregon mother accused of drowning her younger daughter and trying to kill her older one has avoided three scheduled mental evaluations. The Oregonian reports that Jessica Smith’s defense says she had postpartum psychosis. Tillamook County sheriff’s Sgt. Brandon Roberts wrote in court documents that he walked Smith back to her cell after she said she was too sick to meet a psychologist. He says he found her sobbing and clutching a blanket folded into a baby-sized bundle 10 minutes later.

COOS BAY, Ore. (AP) – The wife of a Coos Bay man fatally stabbed over seven months ago has been indicted on a murder charge. The Register-Guard reports Priscilla Lynn Koester’s arraignment is set for today in the death of Christopher Koester, who was found dead in his home in March. Officials say he died from internal bleeding caused by a stab wound to the abdomen.

UMATILLA, Ore. (AP) – A Umatilla man who beat another man to death three years ago has been sentenced to more time in prison after violating the conditions of his early release. The East Oregonian reports that Teodoro Parra Mendoza, who was 17 at the time of the beating, was sentenced to six years in youth prison. A judge agreed to release Mendoza in June for good behavior.

TUALATIN, Ore. (AP) – A barn at a Tualatin farm that offers tours for children has been destroyed in a fire, leaving 15 chickens and a calf dead. KPTV-TV reports the fire was reported at Lee Farms early yesterday. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire quickly and kept the flames from spreading. The family-owned farm has hosted school tours, birthday parties and other events.
