PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Springfield police have charged a 31-year-old man with murder in the deaths of his father and two other people. Police say Michael Bryant attacked his father and mother, killing him and seriously injuring her. They say he then ran down several pedestrians, killing two and critically injuring a third. Police say he also set his parents’ home on fire.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – One of Oregon’s most prolific serial killers has been sentenced to death for the fourth time. Dayton Leroy Rogers was convicted of killing eight women in the 1980s. His three previous convictions were overturned on legal grounds. The new sentence comes despite a moratorium on executions in Oregon, which has not executed anyone since 1997.
BAKER CITY, Ore. (AP) – A Baker City man has been charged with killed the wolf known as OR-22 while coyote hunting. The Oregonian reports that Brennon Witty faces a maximum sentence of a year in jail and a fine of over $6,200. Witty had reported the incident to state officials who found the wolf’s body on private property.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The late civil rights activist Minoru Yasui will be honored with Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s top civilian award. In 1942, Yasui openly defied the wartime curfew against Japanese-Americans, an act that got him sent to a Portland jail for nine months of solitary confinement. The awards will be presented next week at the White House.
