PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Authorities say efforts to recover the body of a climber who died after falling into a crevasse have been temporarily halted because of severe weather on Mount Jefferson in Oregon. Searchers planned to reassess today whether the body of Tommy Fountain can be safely recovered. The 32-year-old Fountain fell Sunday while climbing with his wife at an elevation of 8,800 feet.
ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon county has seen a 65 percent increase in littering calls since implementing a $3-per-can fee for trash disposal at the dump. The News-Review reports that piles of trash have been accumulating in forests and woodlands across the county. Timber Deputy Rick Held says people will dump five or six garbage bags at a time and animals will have strewn the trash everywhere within a few days.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon State Police say freezing rain has caused multiple crashes on Interstate 5. Police urge caution when traveling between southern Douglas County and the mid-Willamette Valley. The agency says several crashes have occurred near Myrtle Creek, and one of its patrol cars was struck while responding to a crash. No injuries have been reported.
CANNON BEACH, Ore. (AP) – Cannon Beach is looking at an ordinance that could help them keep the title of Tree City USA. EO Media Group reports that the Planning Commission last week discussed an ordinance that would make it more difficult for homeowners to take down trees. Officials plan to seek public input on the ordinance. The proposed ordinance would require tree-removal permit applicants to submit to an inspection by the city’s arborist.
