PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Community leaders say Portland must do more to stop the displacement of residents caused by gentrification. Low-income and immigrant families say they’re being pushed out of East Portland, a historically neglected part of town. Portland’s tight rental market, coupled with new public and private investments in East Portland, are making the area more desirable to middle class residents. Advocates say the city should halt no-cause evictions and push for local rent control.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Health Authority is considering charging medical marijuana growers $200 a year for each patient they serve. That’s a significant hike from the current fee of $50 per patient. Oregon law allows medical marijuana growers to grow cannabis for up to four patients. The Oregonian reports that people who grow only for themselves would not be subject to the higher fee.
EDMONDS, Wash. (AP) – An Oregon man has been arrested for allegedly holding his girlfriend captive in a car in Edmonds, Washington and repeatedly brutalizing her for several days. Police say the woman escaped a vehicle where she had been held since Sunday and that she had visible injuries on her arms and neck. The 36-year-old man has been booked into jail.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Oregon has a new state Medicaid director. The Oregon Health Authority has named Lori Coyner to the position. She’ll oversee all Medicaid policy changes and will be Oregon’s point of contact with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Coyner replaces Judy Mohr-Peterson, who this summer became director of Hawaii’s Medicaid program.
