PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The leader of an armed group occupying a national wildlife refuge in Oregon says there may not be a meeting with local residents because they can’t find a place for the gathering. The group had planned to hold a meeting this evening in Burns to explain themselves and inform residents when they will leave. Leader Ammon Bundy says the meeting is now in doubt because Harney County officials won’t let the armed men use the fairgrounds, as they had hoped.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Portland has approved a plan to purchase a 13 acre U.S. post office campus in the city’s Pearl District for $88 million. The Oregonian reports that the deal involves building a new facility for the U.S. Postal Service near the airport. It would be funded by Portland’s $88 million plus $69 million in federal funds.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Gov. Kate Brown has announced a proposal for phased increases in the state’s minimum wage as legislators get ready for a session where it will be a main topic. Oregon’s minimum wage is $9.25 an hour, $2 more than the national minimum. Brown has proposed it be raised to $10.25 outside the Portland metro area in 2017 and to $13.50 by 2022. The proposal will be debated by the legislature in a session that starts in February.
SALEM, Ore. (AP) – Police arrested a fugitive after an eight-hour standoff in Salem. Salem Police say 33-year-old Cesar Banuelo Munoz was wanted on coercion and parole violation charges and that he had evaded officers’ efforts to capture him multiple times. Police say Munoz surrendered after chemical agents were deployed into the home.
