KITZBUEHEL, Austria (AP) – The U.S. ski team says Bill Johnson, the first American skier to win an Olympic downhill title, has died in Oregon after a long illness. He was 55. Megan Harrod, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Alpine team, said Johnson died yesterday at an assisted living facility in Gresham. Johnson’s health had been on the decline for several years after a series of strokes.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The family of a northwestern Oregon girl says the child has died after being swept up by a wave while on vacation in Mexico. The Oregonian reports that Katie Greer says she and her 4-year-old daughter Marissa had been walking on the beach in Cabo San Lucas when the wave pulled them and two others from the shore. She says the little girl “slipped out of my hand.” The family returned home to Canby Tuesday.
LOS ANGELES (AP) – A former Alaska Airlines captain has been charged with operating an airliner under the influence of alcohol on a flight out of Portland. The U.S. attorney’s office says David Arnston was tested twice for drugs and alcohol on June 20, 2014, after piloting an Alaska Airlines flight from Portland to Orange County’s John Wayne Airport. His blood alcohol readings were 0.134 and 0.142 percent.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – The Oregon Board of Education will allow some public schools to keep their Native American-themed mascots as long as they secure permission from one of Oregon’s nine tribes. The Oregonian reports officials had previously ordered 14 schools with Native American mascots to choose new ones by 2017. But an amendment approved yesterday allows schools to keep the mascots as long as tribes agree with them.
