PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – Construction workers have unearthed the bones of a mammoth and other ice age mammals on the Oregon State University football field. The Oregonian reports crews working on an expansion around Reser Stadium in Corvallis found a femur from one of the ancient elephants dating back 10,000 years. Construction work has been moved elsewhere while experts examine the bones.
BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) – The U.S. Education Department has reminded 13 states that federal funding is still tied to testing students on math and language arts, despite the end of No Child Left Behind. The department asked states with large numbers of students skipping the tests how they plan to do better. Thirteen states including Oregon were asked for corrective plans. Responses reviewed by The Associated Press show many plans include outreach to parents and downgrading school ratings.
