Here is the latest Oregon news from The Associated Press
BURNS, Ore. (AP) – The Department of the Interior brought a message of cooperation between ranchers and the government to Burns, Oregon — the same place ranchers recently held an armed occupation of a national wildlife refuge. The Oregonian reports that Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell says she wants to bring attention to the Harney County effort to protect the greater sage grouse while avoiding federal regulation.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) – A federal judge in Portland will allow U.S. Marshals to transport Ammon Bundy and five others to Nevada for a court hearing related to an armed standoff against government agents in 2014. The men have been jailed in Portland since January for their roles in a 41-day standoff with government authorities at an Oregon wildlife refuge. They wanted public lands relinquished to local control.
BEND, Ore. (AP) – An Oregon attorney has asked the court to dismiss the case of a Bend woman accused of smothering her grandmother. The Bulletin reports that 45-year-old Angela Judd is charged with murder in the Dec. 31 death of 92-year-old Nada Bodholdt. Judd’s attorney says there’s no evidence showing Bodholdt died of anything other than natural causes.
CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) – A push to automatically register voters that began in Oregon and California could soon hit a third, notably less liberal state – West Virginia. After condemning a voter ID bill as the “voter suppression act,” Democrats offered an amendment to include automatic registration when people get driver’s licenses or IDs, with an opt-out option. The Republican-led Legislature accepted it. Oregon’s law took effect Jan. 1. Through the year’s first 24 business days, 15,500 Oregonians were newly registered.
