CROW to celebrate new nest

Melanie Heard says it’s – quote – “kind of a big deal, actually”.  It’s the grand opening of the C.R.O.W Center for the Performing Arts September 10th.

Heard and a whole bunch of other volunteers have been working hard for the past 18-months, renovating the former retail space at 3120 Highway 101 into a new nest that houses not only performing and workshop space, but room to store sets, costumes and props.

One major part of the renovation was literally raising the roof two feet in the front of the building to provide more space.  There have been other improvements as well; a new heating system; laminate flooring; and restrooms and dressing rooms.

The Grand Opening will be September 10th from five to nine pm with live entertainment from six to seven.

From the Heart Dentistry

A free one-day dental clinic will be offered later this week.  The Korando Dental Clinic will be transformed Thursday into “From the Heart Dentistry”.

During the one-day clinic, anyone can have a thorough cleaning, an extraction, or certain other repairs done at no cost to the patient.  Dr. Charles W. Korando says “everyone is deserving of respect and dignity” and sometimes someone just needs a little help that “could have big results”.

Registration opens at six a.m. Thursday with services beginning at seven.  The final patient will be served by four p.m.

The Korando Dental Clinic… and From the Heart Dentistry… is at 1705 22nd Street in Florence.

Community Garage Sales

Now in its fourth year, the annual Community Wide Garage Sale will take place again the weekend after Labor Day.  Florence Area Chamber of Commerce President Jenna Bartlett says for just $20 anyone having a garage sale that day can be included in “pre-event” advertising… that includes a classified ad in the Siuslaw News with details about your sale; plus listing on the official Community-Wide Garage Sale map that will be published in the September 7th and 10th editions.

Information on how to signup can be picked up at the Siuslaw News and the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center.

Learning Roberts Rules

Like it or not, meetings are a standard fare of our lives these days… whether it’s a volunteer group you belong to; a homeowner’s association; or even a small governmental agency.

Those meetings can be a productive and effective time to “get things done”.  But, quite often they can drag on much longer than they need to.

Dr. Russ Pierson, the director of the Florence Campus of Lane Community College has designed a workshop for new or old board members and anyone who is part of an organization or committee.

He calls it “Better, Faster Meetings” and it features an overview of Robert’s Rules of Order.  The class will be held Thursday, September 8th at nine a.m. at the Florence Events Center.  The class is just $10 and you can preregister by calling the FEC.

Tenmile Lake Emergency Declaration

Coos County Commissioners passed a resolution last week declaring a state of emergency on Tenmile Lakes.  The water level on the main lake was recently measured at just four feet above sea level… 13 feet below the mark measured in January of this year.  That’s also the lowest recorded level since measurements began in 1952.  Water levels are so low, boat ramps and moorage slips have been left high and dry.

An ad hoc group called Tenmile Grassroots has been pushing for construction of a temporary dam to hold winter and spring runoff through the summer so the situation doesn’t repeat itself.

The low water levels pose not only an environmental challenge say residents, but they will also have dramatic impacts on the economy of the small community south of Reedsport.
