Dog owners cited after 5 pit bulls attack deputy

BEND, Ore. (AP) — Law enforcement officials in central Oregon say the owners of five pit bulls that attacked a sheriff’s deputy have been cited.

KTVZ-TV reports that Charles Williams was cited Thursday for five counts of maintaining a danger dog. He was arrested for an unrelated arrest warrant. Williams’ wife, Tonya, was also issued a citation.

Earlier this week, Deschutes County Field Law Enforcement Technician Laura Conard responded to a report of several aggressive dogs in La Pine.

According to the department, five adult pit bulls attacked Conard while she was standing in the owners’ driveway. She was bitten on calf, knee, upper leg and wrist before breaking free.

Conard says she didn’t want to use her gun or pepper spray because of children in the nearby area.

The dogs have been placed under quarantine at the Humane Society of Central Oregon.

Prosecutors: Portland teen charged with attempted murder

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Prosecutors in Oregon say a 19-year-old Portland man tried to kill his ex-girlfriend and one of her friends while they sat in a car.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that prosecutors charged McKeever Watkins Thompson III on Friday with multiple counts of attempted murder, as well as participating in a drive-by shooting.

According to law enforcement officials, Thompson shot at his ex-girlfriend Alexia Campbell and her friend, Valeria Chavez, using a .380 handgun early Wednesday morning. Court documents show that Campbell told police that Thomas pulled up to their vehicle while driving a Buick sedan and then shot at the window of the car she was sitting in. The Buick then chased Campbell’s vehicle.

Police say Thompson initially denied being involved in the shooting, but later said he shot at Campbell’s car and drove after it.

Thompson is scheduled to be in court again on Sept. 26.

POT DISPENSARY ROBBERY

Police investigate robbery of Portland pot dispensary

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities are investigating reports of an armed robbery at a Portland marijuana dispensary.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that police say multiple suspects were involved in the Sunday night incident, and at least four had handguns.

Officers had arrived at Green Buds Dispensary to find at least two people running away from the business.

Police have made only one arrest and are still searching for other suspects.

Police have not yet determined what was taken from the dispensary.

DEAD WHALE

Dead whale washes ashore on Oregon beach

CANNON BEACH, Ore. (AP) — A dead humpback whale has washed up on a beach just eight miles south of Cannon Beach.

A representative with the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network tells KATU-TV that the whale washed ashore near Oswald West State Park on Friday, but officials believe the animal had been dead for some time.

A necropsy will be scheduled soon to learn how it died.

Stephanie Gooch, who lives near the state park, tells The Oregonian/OregonLive that the whale’s bloated stomach has since exploded as of Saturday.

MAN INDICTED

Deputies: Man indicted on 14 felony charges

ALOHA, Ore. (AP) — Law enforcement officials outside Portland say an Aloha man has been indicted after being accused of recording his co-workers using the bathroom and stealing thousands of pairs of women’s underwear.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that a grand jury indicted 37-year-old Leighton Tilford Olson on 14 felony charges — including child pornography and personal privacy charges — Tuesday. Olson is now being held in Washington County jail after being arrested Friday at a court hearing.

According to deputies, authorities obtained a search warrant for Olson’s apartment after discovering his large collection of women’s underwear while responding to a suspicious circumstance call in Aloha. Deputies say they found recordings of Olson’s co-workers in the employee bathroom at a Little Ceasars.

Some things to know about opioids, political cash in Oregon

Heavy-duty prescription painkillers like hydrocodone and OxyContin are a big part of medicine in Oregon, with doctors prescribing them at a rate that nearly reached one per person last year.

Meanwhile, lawmakers in the state get a huge chunk of their campaign cash from donors with ties to the prescription painkiller business.

But Oregon isn’t alone: a joint investigation by The Associated Press and the Center for Public Integrity found that drugmakers that produce opioid painkillers and allied advocacy groups spent more than $880 million on campaign contributions and lobbying nationwide over the past decade. The money comes from members of the Pain Control Forum — a group that touts prescription opioids as having a vital role in improving the quality of life for millions of Americans.

Armstrong’s late TD helps Huskers past No. 22 Ducks 35-32

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Tommy Armstrong Jr. scored on a 34-yard quarterback draw with 2:29 left, the Nebraska defense held on Oregon’s final series and the Cornhuskers beat the No. 22 Ducks 35-32 on Saturday.

Armstrong converted a fourth-and-9 with a 14-yard pass to Jordan Westerkamp before taking off on his winning run for the Huskers (3-0).

The Ducks, playing without star running back Royce Freeman since early in the game, made it to midfield on their last possession, failing to convert on fourth down.

Armstrong finished with 95 yards rushing, and completed 17 of 33 passes for 200 yards and three touchdowns. Devine Ozigbo also ran for 95 yards.

Kani Benoit rushed six times for 100 yards to lead the Ducks (2-1), and Dakota Prukop passed for 146 yards and ran for 87.

Nebraska coach Mike Riley, who was 0-7 against Ducks from 2008-14, his last seven years as Oregon State’s coach, downplayed the personal satisfaction he got from beating his old nemesis.

“What it means right this moment is a lot. We’re 3-0 going into the Big Ten,” Riley said. “What this team is doing, I love the fight, just the the fact we kept our poise so well to come back and make the plays to win.”

Prukop led a 10-play, 97-yard drive to put the Ducks ahead 32-28 after they had surrendered a 20-7 second-quarter lead. Prukop busted a 22-yard run and Benoit a 46-yarder and Prukop hit Darren Carrington to convert a third-and-12 before Tony Brooks-James scored from the 1.

Freeman went out of the game on the Ducks’ second possession after running five times for 31 yards.

THE TAKEAWAY

OREGON: The Ducks, who allowed 193 yards rushing and 4.8 a carry against Virginia last week, had trouble stopping the run in the second half. They also played another undisciplined game, getting penalized 13 times for 126 yards.

“We need to manage situations better,” Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said. “Obviously, the penalties killed us. It’s a tough one to swallow.”

NEBRASKA: The Huskers made a good start to getting back on the national radar, turning up their running game in the second half and getting a poised performance from Armstrong.

OREGON: The Ducks open Pac-12 play at home against Colorado. Oregon has outscored the Buffaloes 52-15 while beating them five years in a row, but this year’s Colorado team looks better than recent ones.

NEBRASKA: The Huskers play their Big Ten opener on the road against Northwestern, which beat them 30-28 in Lincoln last year.

COAST GUARD-GROUNDED VESSEL

Coast Guard monitors fishing vessel that went aground

FLORENCE, Ore. (AP) — The Coast Guard is monitoring a 50-foot commercial fishing vessel that went aground near Florence, Oregon.

The vessel ran aground at about 2:15 a.m. Saturday on a beach north of the Siuslaw River Bar north jetty.

Officials in North Bend received the initial report from the two-person crew. They said there were no injuries.

A shore party from Coast Guard Station Siuslaw River responded to check for pollution from the vessel. The fishermen contacted local tug operators for salvage.
