Mapleton Basketball:
The Siletz Valley Warriors downed the Mapleton Sailors 64-52 last night in a boys’ Mountain West League playoff game. The Sailors will face Lowell Saturday afternoon with the winner of that game earning the third place slot for the Mountain West in the state 1A playoffs.
Vikings return to post season for first time in seven years
Viking boys’ Basketball has clinched no worse than third place in the Far West League and that means they’ll be headed for a first round “play-in” game next week. Who and where they play will depend on the outcomes Friday night. If Siuslaw can upset fifth ranked North Bend, the Vikings would have 2nd place and a home game next week. If they lose, they could still have 2nd place, but they would need Douglas to beat Marshfield in Coos Bay. If Siuslaw loses and Marshfield wins, the Pirates would have second place and the Vikings would drop to third… and head on the road to a much higher ranked opponent next week.
Siuslaw and North Bend play in Florence Friday night. The girls tip off at six… the boys right after.

On the schedule today… college basketball. Oregon State will host Colorado at Six… the pregame show on KCFM is at 5:30. Number seven Oregon has Utah, also at six…. That game will air on KCST with the pregame show beginning at 5:30.
Former Siuslaw Football Coach passes away
Longtime Oregon prep football coach Erv Garrison has died. He had a 32-year coaching career at 5 different schools, retiring in 1990 after a 12-year stint at Canby. He was known for his mastery of the wing-T offense. He compiled a career record of 185 wins, 120 losses and one tie at Canby, David Douglas, Milwaukie, Siuslaw and Knappa. He coached the Vikings from 1961 to 64 and made it to the semi-finals in the ’63 season.
