Athlete of the Week carries a big stick

Viking softball standout Claire Waggoner is Coast Radio Sport’s Athlete of the Week.  The senior first baseman and utility player batted .800 over three games last week for the Vikings.  She was eight-for-ten at the plate with two doubles.  Waggoner also batted-in four runs, scored four herself and stole four bases.

Honorable mention goes to Viking thrower Carissa Oliver who had a “terrific series” under poor weather conditions at the Ice Breaker Track and Field meet.  She threw a personal best 94-feet, seven-inches for third place in the javelin.  Oliver also won the shot put with a mark of 38-feet, seven inches and the discus with a toss of 127-feet, six inches.

Women’s Sweet 16

U-Conn advanced to its tenth straight women’s basketball Final Four with a 90-52 victory over Oregon Monday night in Bridgeport, Connecticut.  The Huskies will face Mississippi State in one semi-final Friday night in Dallas.

Viking baseball

Siuslaw baseball fell in two tournament games yesterday in Newport.  In game one the Vikings fell 13-2 to the Dallas Dragons.  Then lost a three-run shutout to the Sweet Home Huskies.  The Vikings face Philomath today in Newport at noon.  You can hear it on KCST with the pregame show at 11:45.
