OREGON WOODS HOMICIDE

Woman found shot execution-style in Oregon was from Russia

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a Russian woman found shot in the Oregon woods arrived in the U.S. last month and was having a relationship with the man arrested in her death.

Benton County Senior Deputy District Attorney Amie Matusko said Monday that 27-year-old Anna Alekseyevna Repkina was in a “love triangle relationship” with William Hargrove and another woman.

Hargrove is being held without bail in Benton County on a murder charge. His attorney, Mike Flinn, declined to comment.

Undersheriff Gregory Ridler says Repkina entered the United States through Los Angeles International Airport on March 1.

Matusko says Repkina and the other woman were living at separate locations when the other woman told Hargrove to choose between them.

She says Hargrove then took Repkina to a remote logging road and shot her.

RANCHING STANDOFF TRIAL-NEVADA-THE LATEST

The Latest: Mistrial declared for 4 in Cliven Bundy standoff

LAS VEGAS (AP) — A jury in Las Vegas has deadlocked on federal charges against four men in an armed standoff that stopped government agents from rounding up cattle near Cliven Bundy’s Nevada ranch in 2014.

The judge declared a mistrial Monday after jurors couldn’t reach verdicts on charges against Richard Lovelien, Scott Drexler, Eric Parker and Steven Stewart. Earlier, the same jury convicted two others in the standoff.

Judge scheduled a new trial for June 26. That’s the same day Bundy; his eldest sons, Ammon and Ryan Bundy; and two other defendants are scheduled for trial.

The split decision Monday came in the first trial in the standoff hailed as a victory by those who oppose federal control of vast stretches of land in the U.S. West. It had been seen as a preview for the case against the Bundys.

HUMAN REMAINS

Hiker finds human remains of 24-year-old Oregon man

CARSON, Wash. (AP) — Authorities say a hiker in Washington state has discovered the human remains of a 24-year-old Oregon man in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

The Skamania County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that a hiker from Vancouver reported his finding Friday while hiking just north of Carson, Washington.

Deputies responded and interviewed the hiker who said he was several miles from the Trapper Creek Trailhead when he discovered the remains.

Authorities retrieved the body Saturday and on Monday, the remains were positively identified as Joshua A. Brown of Sunriver, Oregon.

The sheriff’s office says Brown was the suspected driver of a stolen truck involved in a high speed pursuit March 20 in the Carson area, which ended when the driver fled on foot.

The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office hasn’t yet determined a cause of death. The investigation is ongoing.

GIRL ASSAULTED-SUSPECT

Suspect in assault of girl had been deported 16 years ago

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a suspect in the sexual assault of a girl in Portland was deported to Mexico 16 years ago, and they are asking the public to help locate him.

Santiago Martinez-Flores, 48, has a criminal record dating back to 1994. The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office said Monday he was deported to Mexico in March 2001 after being imprisoned in Oregon for about two years. Court records show he had been found guilty of assault, criminal mischief, unauthorized use of a vehicle and failure to perform duties of a driver.

The sexual assault against the 9-year-old girl occurred on Feb. 26 in an apartment. The suspect sexually abused the girl as she was sleeping. Authorities say she woke up during the assault and later described the suspect.

WEST LINN POLICE SHOOTING

Death of Oregon man shot by police ruled a suicide

WEST LINN, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say a man fatally shot by West Linn police has been identified as 25-year-old Chance Thompson, and his death was ruled a suicide.

Officers were dispatched Friday night on a report of a suicidal man armed with a handgun. Shortly after police arrived, Officer Brad Moyle fired a shot that killed Thompson.

West Linn police Capt. Neil Hennelly said in a statement that Moyle will remain on administrative leave during the investigation.

Though an officer fired the shot, the Oregon State Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a suicide because of the man’s statements and behavior.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports this at least the fifth time since 2012 that suicide has been ruled the cause of death in a shooting involving Oregon police.

COWLITZ TRIBAL CASINO

Grand opening of casino near Portland causes big traffic jam

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The rain couldn’t keep gamblers away from the Ilani (ay-lon-ay) Casino.

Monday’s opening of the casino near La Center, Washington, caused an eight-mile traffic backup on northbound Interstate 5. The Washington State Department of Transportation says all of the casino’s 3,000 parking spaces were taken, forcing traffic to back up onto the freeway.

The casino is about 25 miles north of Portland, making it the closest major gambling venue for residents of Oregon’s largest city.

The casino says arrivals via drop off can still be accommodated and the parking situation will be updated hourly on Twitter.

NEWBERG, Ore. (AP) — Police in Oregon are searching for a university student who has been missing since Saturday night.

Capt. Jeff Kosmicki of the Newberg-Dundee Police Department identified the student as 21-year-old Daniel Mellers of George Fox University.

Kosmicki said Mellers never returned after telling roommates he was walking to a convenience store to buy soda.

Police obtained information from Mellers’ cellphone provider that his phone was in Sherwood, about 10 miles northeast of the university. Sherwood police, however, couldn’t find him.

Kosmicki said Mellers’ car is believed to be at a repair shop. Investigators have not located it.

NEWPORT-HANDGUN THREAT

Oregon teen accused of pointing loaded handgun at 2 people

NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) — Newport police arrested a 19-year-old man accused of threatening two people with a handgun.

The department said Monday that the victims told police that Brian Lighthill retrieved the gun from his vehicle after a verbal argument turned physical.

They said the teen tapped the barrel of the firearm on their windshield, pointed the weapon at them and made menacing comments. The victims were able to drive away and call police.

The department says officers stopped Lighthill three blocks away and found a loaded .45 caliber handgun in the center console of his vehicle.

The Seal Rock resident was booked into the Lincoln County Jail on charges of menacing, unlawful firearm possession, pointing a firearm at another, drunken driving and being a minor with alcohol.

Bail was set at $75,000.
