Details on HB2597

We reported on the new distracted driving law that goes into effect this Sunday, but we asked Florence police Chief Tom Turner to spell out some of the unsure aspects of House bill 2597.  Chief Turner told Coast Radio news that one of the most important things to know is where the phone or other electronic device cannot be…

“One things is that people need to remember this includes actually picking up the device and holding it.  Cause a lot of people thought ‘I’m not doing anything with it so therefore I’m not in violation of the law.’  So actually holding the phone can be a violation of this law.

Turner was quick to point out that this is just the latest in distracted driver laws and specifically covers electronic devices.  Drivers can still be pulled over for other things that cause the driver to be reckless.  Including shaving or putting on make-up.  The standard for the law, according to Chief Turner is what they call One Touch/One swipe. If you can retrieve the information, like correcting or viewing directions on your device with one touch one swipe that is allowed, unless of course you are also holding the device.

“Holding the device in your hand one touch one swipe that doesn’t count cause you’re violating the law several different ways there.”

Turner says if it takes more than one touch one swipe, then find a safe place to pull your vehicle over and adjust your device.

Hazardous Waste Disposal

Improper Hazardous waste disposal can contaminate our drinking water in Lane County.  Chemicals, paints and other substances are responsible for toxic levels in water and soils and for that reason the Lane County Hazardous Waste Program in conjunction with waste and recycling businesses in Western Lane County have designated this Friday and Saturday as the Household Hazardous Waste Roundup at the Florence transfer station.  Oil-based Paints, thinners, solvents, strippers, fuels and other automotive fluids qualify for this event.  Motor Oil, anti-freeze fluorescent bulbs and batteries are all collected every business day at the transfer station.  Hazardous waste will be collected 8-5 on Friday and 8-2 on Saturday.

Bozievich Seeks 4th Term

Lane County Commissioner, Jay Bozievich has officially announced that he will seek a 4th term as Lane County Commissioner.  Bozievich says it’s been an honor serving his neighbors in Western Lane County and hopes to continue serving in the future.  Bozievich says that the county has worked hard to improve economic conditions across the board and saved the county millions of dollars but there are still inequities.  Bozievich would still like to tackle the limited availability of affordable housing for the average working in Lane County.  He says housing for the growing workforce is key to continued economic growth.
