Port To Winterize; Gas Prices Inch Down; DMV Fees To Rise

Port To Set Log Booms

The Port of Siuslaw is beginning to prepare for the winter season.  Weather permitting next week, they plan to begin placing protective log booms around the marina.  Booms will be placed around the east and west boat basins and the boat launch at the end of Harbor street.  Interim Port manager Dina McClure said in a press release that recent increases in debris flows along the Siuslaw River has forced the port to take protective measures as the debris can cause damage to docks and moored vessels.  Boaters are advised to use care when operating around the log booms and should not attempt to move the booms during strong winds or rough water conditions. Boaters are responsible for securely replacing the log booms after their boat enters or exits the marina or launch ramp area.  Instructions for how to use the booms will be posted on the docks and at the boat launch.

Gas Prices Slow to Move Downward

Pump prices continue to edge lower as production ramps up after a severe hurricane season. For the week, the national average for regular unleaded slips a penny to $2.46 a gallon while the Oregon average also dips a penny to $2.75. Both averages are down more than 20 cents since reaching year-to-date highs  following Hurricane Harvey.  Locally the price of a gallon of regular gas is just below the national average at $2.43.  Prices are still above last years by an average of .23 cents and Marie Dodds with AAA Oregon says we are on track to pay more than 2016 prices as we move into 2018.

Vehicle Registration Prices to Climb

Your vehicle registration fees will be increasing.  If you have tags expiring on or after January 1st you will be paying an extra $26.00 for two year tags.  The increased fees are part of a major funding package to improve our state’s transportation system and to strengthen our economy. The Oregon Legislature and Gov. Kate Brown approved House Bill 2017 to provide Oregonians with improved roads and bridges, more transportation options, and enhanced safety throughout the system.  In addition to the vehicle registration fee increase, the package is funded by increases in other transportation-related fees that take effect Jan. 1, 2018. These include increases on motor fuel taxes and fees for title transfers and commercial motor vehicles. The bill also creates a 0.5 percent privilege tax on new vehicle purchases, and a $15 fee on new adult bicycles that cost $200 or more.
