Road Striping Set for Wednesday and Thursday

This Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting, crews will be out on Florence streets striping.  The city of Florence maintains approximately 88 lane miles of roadway and will be painting lines to insure public safety.  Under a cooperative contract with the city – the Lane County crews will begin Wednesday morning and drivers are reminded to give workers plenty of room and look for orange safety cones.  Although fast drying paint is used on the roadways drivers that follow too close or try to pass the striping trucks can cause damage to their vehicles and can remove the reflectivity of the new stripe. The city accepts no responsibility for damage to vehicles that cross over the wet paint.  If your vehicle does come in contact with the paint the city says you have about an hour to wash it off with a high pressure hose using warm soapy water.

ODFW Says Razor Clams OK…for Now

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife says that it is safe to consume razor clams along the coast of Oregon except from Cape Arago to the California Border.  Late Friday afternoon the announcement came down that Demoic acid levels in razor clams were low enough that the shelled fish was not dangerous to eat North of Coos Bay.  The clam had been safe in some areas along the coast but recent testing confirms that it is now safe to harvest them without the restriction of the dangerous toxin.  Mussel, crab and clam harvesting (with the exception of razor clams) are all open along the entire Oregon coast according to ODFW.  Recreation licensing requirements, permits and Rules are available through myodfw.com.

Sidewalk Construction to Resume

Construction continues on three separate sections of 101 and 126 for lighted crosswalks with safety features and ADA accessibility.  Oregon Department of Transportation is still planning on a September completion date for the crosswalks at Redwood and 125, 12th and Highway 101 and between 15th and 16th street and Highway 101.  Most of the work to be completed will be done overnights with little interference with daily traffic but ODOT is issuing reminders that the crosswalks are not ready to use and that pedestrians and motorists should proceed with extreme caution in those areas.

Power of Florence in the Books

On Saturday volunteers could be seen throughout the community for the Power of Florence.  Crews were working at Siuslaw High School removing weeds and adding mulch to spruce up the entrance to the school.  And the Florence Event center was getting some beautification as well.  Groups throughout the city were working on projects as well as setting up booths in the Grocery Outlet parking lot and raising money for local charities.  This was the 8th year for the event started by Siuslaw High School graduate Kaylee Graham and now being headed by Ava Glowacki and Faith Lumado.
