Mariner Dies After Capsizing

The U.S. Coast Guard Helicopter and two 47 foot life boats responded to a capsized boat at the North Jetty near the mouth of the Siuslaw River yesterday around 2:50 pm. Just after low tide.  Coast Guard crews recovered one person from the water who was unresponsive.  Crews searched the waters for other possible victims.  It was determined that only one person was in the boat.  The victim was air lifted to Florence municipal airport and transported by ambulance to Peace Health.  Medical personnel were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead.  The victim was a Florence resident.  Coast Radio is withholding the name and further details until an official release is issued.

Greentrees Fire

Fire officials responded to a fire in green trees subdivision yesterday evening.  At 5:38 Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue responded to space 211 in Greentrees East. It was an apparent kitchen fire.  Florence Police also responded.  The fire was quickly extinguished and there were no reports of injury.

Herring Reprieve

August 1st was to be the date that businesses that use Styrofoam containers for resale would begin receiving fines.  The city postponed that for another 6 months for packaged herring used for bait.  The extension is to allow for businesses to find distributors that package using recyclable or biodegradable containers.  The ban for food grade Styrofoam is still intact.

Motorcyclist’s Name Released

Police have released the name of the motorcyclist that was killed Saturday evening on State Route 36.  Trevor r. Bernhardt, 36 of Mapleton was killed when the Honda CBR motorcycle rear ended a black 1998 dodge Ram pick-up that was turning onto North Fork Siuslaw Road.  The Driver of the Truck, 24 year old Joshua Lee was not injured.

School Board Meeting

The Siuslaw School Board will hold its meeting Wednesday evening at the offices on 2111 Oak Street at 6:30 pm.  The board will review the summer school and twilight programs and go over policy changes and updates, facility planning and goals for the upcoming school year.

National Night Out

Tonight is the national night out event at Miller Park.  The event is free and open to the public from 6-9 pm with free hot dogs and hamburgers and plenty of fun for the whole family and an opportunity to meet with first responders in Florence.
