Light Up a Life

Peace harbor’s hospice will once again celebrate their Light Up A Life Ceremony.  The event is an opportunity for friends and families to honor their loved ones that passed.  This year’s ceremony will be the 23rd annual.  Kathy Murphy with Hospice says it is a time reflect as well as reconnect family and caregivers.

“It’s a very nice time of just fellowship afterwards and it’s very enjoyable.”

During the ceremony family members will commemorate their loved ones with a star.

“We have a tree where by those who donate can put their loved ones names on a star and the stars are put on a tree and we read each name throughout the ceremony.”

There will also be a menorah where stars of David can also be placed.  The Event will be at the Florence Event Center on December 8 from 2-3:30 pm.

Commissioners Approve Raise

Yesterday Lane County Commissioners voted to give themselves a 2 % cost of living pay increase which will add about $3400.00 annually to their pay.  The vote was 3-2.  Earlier in the meeting they dismissed a proposal to give themselves a 5% increase.  Commissioner Jay Bozevich says the increase basically keeps them in pace with inflation.  Their pay will rise in 2019 to $86,150 and $87,870 in 2020.  County commissioner salary averages for 5 comparable counties is around $119,000.00.

Final Yard Debris

This Saturday will be the final yard debris collection of the season.  The city of Florence sets the third Saturday of each month from spring to fall to allow residents to dispose of yard debris, Tree clippings, Leaves, Grass clippings, Weeds, Prunings, and brush.  The city will start receiving clippings again in March.  Standard truck loads or small utility trailers are 10 dollars per load.  Medium size trailers are 14 dollars and large trailers are 21 dollars.  The event will run from 9am until 2 pm at the north end of the airport at 27th and Kingwood.

Bras for a Cause

The Soroptomist will be hosting their Bras for a Cause event this Saturday evening at 6pm at the Florence Event Center.  The fundraiser will support scholarships, human trafficking awareness as well as their “live your dreams” awards.  Bras are decorated by individuals and local artists and made available through a live auction.  There will also be a silent auction, dessert auction and entertainment.  Dinner and wine will be served.  Tickets are still available for the event at $50 per person.
