First Citizen Nominees
The nominations for First Citizen and Future First Citizen have been announced. For First Citizen the nominations are Dee Osborne and Harlan Springer and Future First Citizen nominations are Audrey Lowder, Robert Mans, Samantha Scheer and Naomi Shoji. The 11th annual Siuslaw Awards will be held Wednesday January 23 at the Florence Event Center they will also feature Business Awards for Community Caring, Curb Appeal, Excellence in Customer Service, Innovation in Business, Non-Profit Achievement, and the Stu Johnston Business of the Year Award. The Florence Area Chamber of Commerce will also recognize an individual or business that has selflessly given their time and efforts in supporting the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce with the Distinguished Service Award.

Volunteer Roster Climbs
The scope of volunteer work within city committees is growing as the new year and the new council is beginning its 2019 -2020 planning. More than 85 citizens have submitted their applications for various city committees. Several committees have been combined and the volunteer list lengthened to better serve the City Council. Committees are formed to offer assistance in the areas of public transportation, land use and development, environmental issues as well as the arts. The city council will make appointment announcements at a future council meeting.
Work Session for City
The City of Florence will take part in an all day work session on Monday that will begin at 8:30. The City Council along with other city management will participate and look at goals for the new year and beyond. City manager Erin Reynolds.
“This is their chance as a city council to sit down and look at the year and the years ahead, plan and talk about what priorities they have.”
They will be looking at specific objectives and tasks that they would like to be included in the work plan. The information discussed will then be formulated in an official plan from which the city can build its biennial budget.
