Weather Continues to Bear Down
Freezing temperatures overnight exacerbated conditions on Oregon roadways. From Reedsport through Gardiner residents have been dealing with power outages caused by heavy snow and ice. The same is true for residents on 126 from Mapleton to Veneta. Oregon Department of Transportation reopened 126 from Mapleton to Veneta at about 3:30 yesterday afternoon after 12 hours of continual work to clean up broken limbs and downed trees. But roads, according to ODOT, are still treacherous and people are advised to stay home unless travel is needed for emergencies. ODOT crews were out overnight prepping the roads and plowing snow. Drivers are being warned to watch for black ice. The National Weather Service reported over 3 inches of snow fell in Walton and about 4 inches in Veneta, but actual totals were likely higher. Areas of Eugene reported up to a foot of snow. Hundreds of residents in the Mapleton/Swisshome area remained without power into the overnight hours. Mapleton Schools will be on a two hour delay… A slight chance of snow remains in the Florence Forecast until Thursday intermixed with rain.
Meet and Greet For SVFR/WLAD Candidates
Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue has selected 4 candidates to interview for the position as new Fire and EMS Chief and IGA Administrator. They will be introduced to the public on Wednesday evening at 7pm at the main fire station on Highway 101. Residents are invited to attend this meet and greet. A quorum of SVFR and WLAD board of Directors may be present. There is no intent to discuss district business at this event.
Gas Prices Jump
Florence gas prices took a brisk upswing this week jumping 6 cents in one day to an average or $2.43 a gallon. AAA Oregon says you can expect more price hikes in lieu of the recent snow and ice to hit the area. Already ailing refineries are having difficulty with maintenance and the switch back to spring and summer blend fuels. The state average currently sits at 2.73 a gallon of regular. Though AAA Oregon reports that 80 percent of stations across the state are currently selling gas below $2.50 a gallon.
