Airport Slated for Temporary Closure
Along with several other citywide projects happening in Florence the Florence Municipal Airport will be undertaking a new lighting improvement project that will require the closing of the airport and airport runway during a 10 hour period daily from Monday through Friday. Beginning Monday March 18, from 10am to 8 pm the airport will be closed. According to Public Works Director, Mike Miller, this includes all navigational aids.
“The Beacon will be off, the lighted windsock will be off and then of course the precision approach and the runway indicator lights will be offline.”
Miller says the current lighting has reached the end of its useful life. The last installation was just about 30 years ago. The new lights will be l-e-d and will include new Precision Approach Pathway Indicator lights as well as end of runway lighting. The reason for the closure is due to the necessity of channeling pathway ditches on either side of the runway and FAA regulations prohibit aircraft when such construction is adjacent to runways. Miller also says that operations will be restored for weekend use. Completion of the project is expected by May 16th.
Burn Season
March 1st indicated the beginning of the Spring burn season in Lane County. The Lane Regional Air Protection Agency has said that recent storms have produced a large amount of wood for outdoor burning and reminds county residents to follow regulations concerning outdoor burning. No burning is permitted within the City of Florence’s boundaries and burning woody yard debris is allowed with some restrictions on property sizes. Residents can only burn debris created from their own property and cannot burn collected piles from other sites. Outdoor burning advisories will be posted with start and stop times when necessary. The spring burning season concludes on June 1st.
Job Fair
This Thursday Three Rivers Casino Resort will host its annual job fair. Dozens of businesses will be on hand to talk with residents about opportunities from the U.S. Forest service to culinary education. Trade jobs will also be represented as well as health, census and trucking. There will also be representatives from Angel Job Corp and Lane County government. The event will be held in the casino event center an students 18 and under can access the event without traveling through the casino floor. The event begins at 10am Thursday and goes through 3pm.
