Siuslaw Teacher Arrested

A teacher in the Siuslaw School District was arrested after an incident off campus over the weekend.  On Wednesday May 1st.  Former Siuslaw girls basketball coach Clint Tatum was arrested on one felony charge of Criminal mischief in the first degree and one felony charge of criminal mistreatment in the first degree.  In a statement released by Siuslaw School superintendent Andy Grzeskowiak, Tatum has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with Siuslaw School District and the State of Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices policies.  No details have been released on the incident or incidents that led to the arrest.  Tatum was taken into custody by the Florence Police Department.

Body Found

Police in Yachats have reported finding a body on the beach in Yachats.  KMTR TV in Eugene is reporting that 43 year old Michael Clift of Newport was found dead on the beach between 3rd and 4th streets yesterday just after 10 am.  there is no report on the cause of death.  Oregon State Police are investigating.

Fireworks A Go

According to the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce, the dilemma of not having a launching spot for the 4th of July fireworks has been solved.  Executive Director of the Chamber, Bettina Hannigan sent notice that the Port of Siuslaw has offered to take on the responsibility of providing the space for the annual tradition to continue.  Hannigan says that they still need sponsors to help offset the cost of the event, but they can now move forward with a location secured.

Free Chowder

If you have purchased a Coastal Canvas pin in support of one of the Rhody Princesses you can now get a free cup of chowder at participating restaurants in the area.  During the month of May the Firehouse, Bay Street Grille, the Hukilau, ICM and Travelers Cove will be offering the Florence favorite.  During Rhody Weekend Clawson’s Wheelhouse will also participate.  Pins can be purchased for 3 dollars at locations around town and at the Florence Area Chamber of Commerce on Highway 101.

City Council

The Florence City Council will convene Monday evening at 5:30 at the Florence City Hall.  Along with several proclamations the city will also consider a proposal from Steve’s Masonry, LLC for the construction of the Miller Park concession stand masonry wall and will consider the approval of a resolution to adjust the solid waste rate.
