Lane County Manhunt; Chinook Season Opens; Bear Sightnings

Lane County Manhunt

The Lane County Sheriff’s department is seeking the publics help in locating a Florence man they say shot a person in the leg.  The shooting took place on Monday evening and the victim arrived at Peace Harbor hospital.  Sheriff’s deputies responded.  According to Lane County Sherriff’s Sergeant Carrie Carver the incident happened south of Florence on Highway 101.  They are searching for 35 year old Gene Manuel Joseph who is the suspected shooter.  Carver warns that the suspect is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.  Joseph is described as a white male, 5ft-10in tall weighing approximately 200 pounds with long black hair and a black beard.

Chinook Season Opens

The outgoing tide this morning has made for a slow start for the opening day of Chinook fishing on the Siuslaw.  At 5:19 this morning Jay Cable over at the Bridgeport Market said that there were only a couple of boats that were headed out.

“The tide running out is not real conducive to fishing on the river.”

He said he expects to see a lot more traffic as the tide switches.  High tide is at 2:30 this afternoon and Cable says around noon the area should be swarming.  The Department of Fish and Wildlife has limited Fall Chinook to One per day with a total of 5 for the season.  Cable did say though that ocean fishing has been extremely productive.

“One boat came in with 43 tune and Nolan, David Huntington’s dad and David Carruthers came in with 30 some tuna.”

Cable says both boats were out about 25 miles.

Bear Sightnings

There have been several bear sightings around town in recent days.  Last week a large black bear was caught on security camera in the area of 15th and Pine street.  A smaller version was caught on security footage on 8th street two nights ago.  Both bears were viewed trying to access areas in an apparent search for food.  Both incidents occurred in the early morning hours.  Residents are advised to keep their pets inside and be very cautious going outside while it is dark.
