Coast Guard Rescue

The U.S. Coast Guard Sunday morning responded to a boat in distress near the entrance to the Coos River.  The boat lost rudder control after hitting a submerged object and began drifting towards the rocks.  The two men who were aboard the vessel jumped from the boat and swam toward the rocks while the boat drifted, crashing against the jetty.  One man suffered abrasions and the other was unharmed, but both had to be airlifted from the rocks.  The Fearless II was a commercial vessel returning to port.  The accident happened around 12:52 am in the morning.

Domestic Violence Awareness

October begins the observance of Domestic Violence Awareness month.  Siuslaw Outreach Services will be hosting a gathering and a silent walk to remember lives lost during the acts of domestic violence and show support for survivors.  The event will be this Sunday at 12:45 pm.  At conclusion of the Silent Walk a brief vigil will be held to remember those who lost their lives due to domestic violence.  That vigil will take place on the boardwalk in Old Town.

Hazardous Waste Roundup

Friday and Saturday, October 4th and 5th Lane County will hold a free hazardous waste roundup and will collect a total of 35 gallons of hazardous waste per customer.  This is an opportunity to dispose of paints, household cleaners, lawn and garden chemicals, car care products, pool chemicals and other household waste.  They cannot accept asbestos, electronics or explosives.  The event is from noon to 5 pm on Friday the fourth and from 8 to 2 pm on Saturday the 5th. at the Lane County Transfer station on Rhododendron.

Educational Workshop

This evening from 6-7:30 pm the Florence Community PTA will be hosting an educational workshop entitled Parenting in a Digital World.  The guest speaker is Collin Robinson of the Oregon PTA Family Engagement Committee.  Topics covered in the workshop are Apps: the Good and the Bad, Online Reputation, Screen Time, Modeling Behavior, and Forming a digital Family Plan.  The event will be held at Siuslaw Middle School and is open to parents, educators and community members at no charge and refreshments will be served.
