Mapleton Fire Update; 7th Lane County COVID-19 Death; Body Identified; Flu Season

Mapleton Fire Update

Firefighters completed a successful burnout operation on the Sweet Creek Milepost 2 fire overnight Wednesday into Thursday.  Crews removed about 10 acres of unburned fuel between the fire perimeter and established fire line according to the ODF daily briefing.  As of yesterday the fire is reportedly 30% contained and crews are looking for and responding to hotspots outside the fire line the report continued.  Operations Section Chief Mike Carlson with the Oregon Department of Forestry, speaking at yesterday morning’s briefing asked crews to be slow, productive and safe as they continue to locate and extinguish hotspots.  In addition the forest service is adding two additional type one helicopters to help with delivery of water to the fire. Type one helicopters can deliver up to 2800 gallons of water with pinpoint accuracy according to fireaviation.com.  Boating on the Siuslaw River will be closed from the Tiernan ramp to the Mapleton Bridge until at least September 13.

7th Lane County COVID-19 Death

Lane County Public Health has confirmed the death of a 7th individual from the coronavirus. The latest is an 82 year old man from the Eugene Springfield area.  He had not been hospitalized prior to his death and it is unknown at this time if he had underlying health conditions.  The latest increases the death toll in the state to 471 with 3 more reported deaths yesterday.  Lane County COCIV-19 cases is now at 750 with 2 people currently hospitalized.  Statewide the total number of cases is at 27,336 with 274 new cases reported yesterday.

Body Identified

The Oregon State Police have identified the body of a male that washed up on the beach at Bob’s Creek on Friday August 21st.  the deceased is 41 year old Phan Hoang.  According to the OSP investigation the cause of death is believed to be self-caused.

Flu Season

It is unsure what the coming flu season will look like, but public health officials are already touting the need to get your flu vaccine. With the coronavirus pandemic still heavy in the us, Health officials say protecting yourself from the Flu is more important than ever.  Tuesday morning medical personnel from Peace Harbor Hospital will join Coast Radio for a conversation on the upcoming flu season.  That will air at 8:30 on KCST and rebroadcast on KCFM at 9:40
