COVID-19

While Florence is sitting at 1800 cases of COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic it is unknown how the impact of the virus is affecting the community.  The Oregon Health Authority is reporting Florence Cases Weekly, but Florence and the state as a whole is not receiving all of the known cases.  Information by the OHA is showing that home testing is up and not all home tests are reported.  Lane County Health is tracking the numbers for the Florence area, but due to staffing and reporting are only computing the numbers once a week.  Of the tests that are being reported the OHA is showing an increase in percentages of positive cases.  Case numbers had decreased earlier this year, but now positivity rates are above 13%, some of the highest percentages in several months.  There are also higher numbers of individuals in hospitals with 458 the current total and 63 in ICU.  The OHA is also reporting that the latest variant BA.5 is more virulent and easier spread.  They are recommending mask wearing in public spaces where crowds gather.

Block Party

Friday’s annual Block Party, sponsored by the city of Florence was well attended.  The picture perfect day brought out the crowds to listen to music, enjoy free ice cream and socialize.  The event was initialized organized in 2018 to celebrate the city’s 125 anniversary and continues to mark the occasion of the city’s commitment to being a Coast Guard City.  Several non-profits were also featured at the event.

City Council Meeting

The Florence City Council meets this evening at City Hall for a meeting beginning at 5:30.  The meeting is still available online for individuals that want to view the meeting without attending in person.  There are two resolutions that the council will consider.  The council will also hear from Public Works Director Mike Miller regarding a new fueling facility, the expansion of the Public Works yard area, and a storage facility on Airport property.
