Support For a Local Business

A lot of community concern has been centered on the condition of Jose De la Mora following a severe stroke earlier this month.  Dale Edwards had some good news to report over the weekend.

“They have taken him off the ventilator, but he’s got a long recovery ahead of him.  But the recovery is going to be pretty extensive.”

De la Mora and his wife Rosa operate a popular eatery in Florence, Rosa’s Mexican Restaurant.

“At this point in time it’s been closed indefinitely.  That doesn’t mean permanently, that just means until they’re able to see him get into rehab and move forward that way.”

Edwards said both Jose and Rosa have demonstrated an ongoing commitment to giving back to the community over the past several years.  He hopes the community can do the same.

“I know the generosity of Florence and if they can step up and help him that would be a benefit to both Rosa and Yoskar and (unintelligible), their two sons.  Because his medical expenses are going to be pretty significant and hey have limited resources.”

An account has been set up at Banner Bank for the De la Mora Family.  Several other family owned businesses in Florence have already stepped up to help.

“It is one of the most amazing shows I’ve ever seen and I’m so excited to be directing it.”

Melanie Heard says in addition to being amazing, Spongebob the Musical is very expensive to produce.  She has budgeted $45-thousand.

“People are kind of blown away when they hear a number that big, because it doesn’t seem like it should cost that much.  But, when you take into consideration all of the professional caliber theater components that we put into our productions, it just adds up.”

Heard said they have planned fund raisers to help pay for it, including a beach themed bingo night March 4th at Three Rivers Casino.  She also was “grateful and amazed” to find out earlier this week that her organization received a $21,000 grant from the Three Rivers Foundation, the giving arm of the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians.

Weather

According to the National Weather Service we are not quite down with wintry weather.  A winter weather advisory expires at noon today, but the NWS is predicting more wintry mix tomorrow and tomorrow night.  Nothing like we saw mid-week last week, but still a potential for some light snow possibly through Tuesday night.

Legislature Looks to Regulate Hospital Staffing

Hospital staff members are struggling under the strain of patient overload and they want Oregon lawmakers to do something about it. A measure in Salem would create nurse to patient ratios so they and other medical staff have a fixed number of patients they are caring for. Aaron Green is a Certified Nursing Assistant at McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center. He says he’s had more than 35 patients to tend to at one time, creating potential safety issues.

“It’s important to me that everyone gets the best care and the way to do that is to get the staffing ratios so that our loved ones, your loved ones, you, whoever comes in here knows they’re going to get the best care possible.”

Oregon hospitals have voiced their opposition to the legislation. The Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health Systems called it a one-sized solution for a more complex problem. The measure, House Bill 2697, is scheduled for a public hearing on tomorrow.
