Fire Danger: HIGH

The Fourth of July is a day of celebration that usually includes fireworks, but as of midnight last night the entirety of Western Lane County moved into a High fire danger.  The recent high winds and relative low humidity has placed the danger to a condition where restrictions are now in place.  While there was already a burn ban there is now no burning in burn barrels and no fireworks near Oregon Department of Forestry land.  Smoking while traveling will only be allowed in enclosed vehicles on improved roads and motorized vehicles, including motorcycles and all terrain vehicles are only allowed on improved roads and you must carry a shovel and one gallon of water or a 2.5 pound or larger fire extinguisher.  There is also no mowing of dead or dried grass between the hours of 10 am and 8 pm.  Also prohibited is the use of power-driven equipment such as chain saws, weed eaters and mowers.  The fire restrictions also include portions of Douglas and Linn Counties.

Fireworks

This evening’s fireworks display will be conducted in old Town on the Port of Siuslaw Property.  It will be a busy evening for traffic and space will likely fill up fast.  The fireworks are scheduled to begin at 10:10 pm.  Parking in the port camping area will be reserved for paid guests only, but the adjacent parking lot is available.  The fireworks display will last 20 minutes.  There is to be no personal fireworks anywhere in the city limits.

There is a heat advisory in effect for today and tomorrow for areas east of Florence with temperatures expected in the 90’s today for Mapleton and eastward.  It is a good time to check in on friends that may be living without air conditioning in the affected areas. Keep plenty of water on hand and protect yourself from the sun.
