News for Thursday, July 27th, 2023: Dunes City Council responding to calls to disincorporate. Siuslaw School Board selecte leadership for coming year. Human remains found near Yachats. Florence “Night Out”

The Future of Dunes City pondered…

The Dunes City Council is going to hold a special session in two weeks to talk about whether or not to ask voters about possible disincorporation.  If they take that step, it could wind up on a ballot in the near future says City Administrator Jamie Mills.  (Mills1)-“This would be an advisory question asking if Dunes City should cease being a city.”  The voter response would not be binding and Mills said it stems from a group of Westlake residents led by lifelong Westlake resident Jeanne Jackson. (Mills2)-“The position they took was that the city shouldn’t even be here, that we stole Westlake from them and this kind of thing.  I mean it was a rehash of history.” If the matter makes it to the ballot, whatever voters decide would still not be binding.  That would require yet another vote by residents.  Right now, Mills says, the council is exploring potential costs involved in the first election.  They meet Wednesday, August 9th, six PM at Dunes City Hall.

Florence police to host evening at Miller Park August 1st

The Fifth Annual “National Night Out”, hosted locally by the Florence Police Department is coming up next Tuesday evening at Miller Park.  Beginning at six pm there will be food, a live DJ, face painting, and inflatable activities.  School Resource Officer Hailey Koontz said last year’s Night Out was a “great time” and she, along with the other officers on the department “can’t wait to see everyone”.   The National Night Out is a “community-police” event held throughout the U.S. and is intended to increase awareness of local policing agencies.

New Board Chair selected for Siuslaw

The Siuslaw School Board selected new leadership for the coming fiscal year last night.  Vice Chair Maureen Miltenberger administered the oath of office to newly elected Josh Haberly and Tamara Cole as well as two returning directors, Brian Lacouture and Diana Pimlott.  Immediately following the swearing in, the election of board chair and vice-chair ensued.  Miltenberger was nominated to step up to the chair position by director Kady Sneddon.  Lacouture was also nominated to the chair, this by Cole.  Lacouture won the post on a split vote, 5-2.  Miltenberger was then re-elected unanimously to serve again as vice-chair.

Authorities believe they can identify remains found in wooded area near Yachats

Partially decomposed human remains and a faithful dog were discovered Tuesday in a remote campsite outside Yachats.  Hikers made that discovery, and collected the dog and reported the finds to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s office.  Deputies were then led to the site, about a half-mile into thick foliage in rough terrain, where officers conducted a death investigation.  No suspicious circumstances were determined and they were able to make a tentative identification.  They won’t release that name without further testing and notification of family.  According to a press release, it appears the remains had been exposed to the environment for a prolonged period.  Animal services took the dog to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
