Dunes City Meeting
Who will take over the mayor’s position in Dunes City will not likely be addressed tonight during the August meeting of the Dunes City Council. Mayor Sheldon Meyer resigned suddenly at the end of a special meeting last week. Two current sitting councilors, council president Susan Shaw and councilor Rory Hammond, expressed interest in assuming his post and an ad hoc committee was appointed with the express mission of interviewing them and reporting back to the council. That committee report is not on the agenda for this evening’s meeting at Dunes City Hall, but, the council will hear from their legal counsel, Ross Williamson, on three other matters, including the process for possibly putting a property tax measure on the ballot. The meeting begins at six pm.
Hot Temps and Air Quality
It is another day for triple-digit temperatures in the valley as Eugene continues under an extreme heat warning. Air quality is also an issue. It is forecast to be in the poor range today and prompted Lane County officials to open a clean air and cooling center. There is expected to be some haze and smokey conditions for the coast today as well with the air quality in the moderate range. According to the Lane Regional Air Protection Agency’s charts people with no health issues are not at risk from moderate conditions, but those who suffer from breathing troubles should limit their outdoor activities.
Mapleton School Board
The first Mapleton School Board meeting of the year will begin this evening with the oath of office for a new director. Abbie Kimble was elected in May to fill the seat formerly held by Mary Ellen Mansfield. Mansfield did not seek reelection. Superintendent Sue Wilson is slated to review the 2022-23 school year, and look ahead to the new school year this evening. One personnel item to be reviewed by the board tonight: Brenda Moyer, formerly the principal at the Elementary school will now assume the role of Special Programs Director. The Mapleton School Board meeting will be called to order in the high school gym at six PM.
