Planning Commission Meeting

The Florence Planning Commission will meet tomorrow evening with two items on their agenda.  The first will be a general design review of the proposed Dollar General Store that would be located on the vacant property between Chens Restaurant and the Burger King on Highway 101.  Considerations will be made concerning the store’s exterior architectural features, color palette, parking, lighting, landscaping, pedestrian walkways, access, utilities and more. They will also consider a Conditional Use Permit for a property located on the southeast corner of Laure and 7th street for a single unit dwelling and a temporary hookup for an Recreational Vehicle.  In addition, a variance has been requested for a reduction in setback for the rear yard area to 5 feet.  The Planning Commission will meet at city hall at 5:30 Tuesday.

Master Recyclers

Waste Wise Lane County will host a master recycler community information meeting tomorrow at 4 pm. As part of Lane County Waste Management the program will discuss local recycling programs, environmental waste reduction projects and the Oregon State Senate Bill 582 which in part regulates production and use for packaging, printing and food serviceware. Refreshments will be available.

Caregiver Month

November is National Family Caregivers Month and a few tips can help people with these duties. Head of the Oregon organization Aging Concerns, Vicki Schmall, says family caregivers often are called the backbone of long-term care. But she says people performing these roles must remember to think about themselves as well.

“I often say to family caregivers taking care of yourself is really the best gift you can give to the person who needs your care.”

Schmall says its critical that they be willing to ask for and accept help. She says there are local supports available for caregivers through programs such as Oregon Care Partners and the state’s Aging and Disability Resource Connection.  She also  says people also should do their research early about potential facilities in the event in-home care becomes too much. She points to the service Eldercare Locator as a helpful resource in this search.
