Election Ballots

Ballots for the 2024 general election must be received by the Lane County Board of Elections by 8 pm tomorrow.  Several key seats are  up for grabs in the state including Oregon Attorney General and the 4th seat of the US Congressional District.  Locally Senator Dick Anderson and Representative Boomer Wright are seeking another term in representing the Oregon Coast.  Voters will also decide who will choose the redistricting of Lane County commissioners.  Measure 20-362 could give the task to an independent panel of random individuals. As it stands a No vote would leave things the same and redistricting would go to a panel chosen by the commissioners.  Other important issues are a tax on business and a change in the way Oregonians vote.  A reminder to sign the back of your ballot envelope in order for your vote to count.  There is a secure drop box at the justice center off 9th street for convenience.

Candy Tampering: Waldport

Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a concerning incident in Waldport. On the evening of November 1st, an 18-year-old Waldport resident reported discovering what appeared to be a needle embedded in a Twix candy bar she received while trick-or-treating on Halloween. Sheriff’s deputies responded, examined, and collected the candy, confirming the presence of a thin metal object in the bar. The resident, who had been trick-or-treating in the South Crestline Drive area, was not injured. Authorities are urging residents to report any similar findings as the investigation into this incident continues.

New Rental Assistance Benefits

On Friday, November 1st, Oregon Health Plan members with specific health conditions began qualifying for new, first-of-its-kind benefits aimed at helping them stay housed. The Oregon Health Authority launched these Medicaid benefits, which include up to six months of rent assistance, utility payments, home modifications, and rental navigation services. Eligible members must meet certain health criteria, such as complex medical conditions, disabilities, recent maternity, or advanced age. OHA Director Dr. Sejal Hathi explained that these benefits address Oregon’s housing crisis by helping vulnerable residents avoid the health impacts of homelessness. Oregon is the first state to test these housing services as Medicaid benefits statewide. For details, members can contact their health plan or visit the Oregon Health Authority’s website.
