Athlete of the Week
The Sports Club, the Siuslaw News and Coast Radio Sports congratulate senior lady Viking grappler Abby Riggs as this week’s Athlete of the Week. Abby had a second place finish in Saturday’s Nick Lutz Invitational at 115 pounds narrowly losing in the final round to last year’s 110 lb. state Champion EmmaLee Brissett of Oak Ridge. Her first 3 matches were won by fall.
Honorable mention goes to Viking basketball’s Gave DeLeon who scored 16 points, 10 in the third quarter in Friday’s loss against the Sutherlin Bulldogs.
Wrestling
Viking wrestling this week, the girls’ team will host Coquille, Marshfield, and Oakridge for Senior Night on Thursday. Matches begin at 5:00 PM, and with smaller team sizes, the event is expected to conclude by 7:30 or 8:00 PM. Meanwhile, the boys’ team is gearing up to compete at Cascade High School on Wednesday, pending confirmation that the competition will be run as an endowment event. Looking ahead to next weekend, the boys will travel to Santiam Christian to compete, while the girls will take the weekend off.
Basketball
The Mapleton boys and girl’s basketball teams will be at home tonight as they face the McKenzie Eagles. The boys will be up first at 5:30 followed by the girls.
